Il Carnevale Saraceno
Le scorrerie perpetrate dai Saraceni fra il VIII e il IX secolo d.C. furono tragiche per tutto il meridione d’Italia.
Durante il periodo di Carnevale, Montalto rievoca in chiave grottesca la vittoria conseguita dai montaltesi sulle truppe del sanguinario Ibrahim II ibn Ahmad, che cercò di istaurare un dominio musulmano in Sicilia e parte della Calabria.
Un corteo di grosse maschere di cartapesta animate percorre ogni anno le vie del paese per arrivare in Piazza E. Bianco, dove si fa rivivere la battaglia combattuta a colpi di scimitarre.
The Saraceno Carnival
The raids perpetrated by the Saracens between the 8th and 9th centuries AD they were tragedy for the southern part of Italy.
During the Carnival period, Montalto recalls ,in a grotesque key, the victory achieved by the people of Montalto on the troops of the bloodthirsty Ibrahim II ibn Ahmad, who tried to establish a Muslim dominion in Sicily and in part of Calabria.
A procession of large animated papier-mache masks goes through the streets of the town every year and arrives in Piazza E. Bianco, where the battle fought with scimitars is revived.
